Visual Logic Predictive Text by Frances Sneddon
SIMUL8 Professional 2007 brings us Predictive Visual Logic. This is one of the most significant and exciting developments we've made. As far as we know we're the first simulation package to bring you this power.
I am so excited by it and I guarantee once you've had it for 10 minutes you will never want to be without it, it easily speeds up your model development time by about 75%
What is Predictive Text
When you're in the Visual Logic Free Edit mode as you type SIMUL8 will predict what you're trying to type by providing you all the variables, commands, objects, distributions, labels etc that exist in your simulation. You can then select from the list or keep typing and SIMUL8 will narrow the list for you. As soon as you see what you want just hit Tab to accept.
With Predictive Text and the enhanced Free Edit mode you no longer have to double click through dialogs to create your code. If you can't quite remember the name of that work center then instead of clicking through two or three dialogs if you know roughly what it's called you just type and SIMUL8 helps you build the commands.
Also if you decide you want to change part of the line you don't need to double click and rebuild the command you can freely type, highlight copy and paste bits of lines. It's just like being in say Notepad, this freedom makes life so much easier.
Create Variables and More While You Type
As you're typing your Visual Logic you often find you need to create more variables, labels, distributions and labels. So that you never have to leave the Visual Logic window you can now just type say the name of the variable you want to create, highlight it and right click to create the variable. The Predictive Typing list is automatically updated and you're free to use the variable as you please. Fantastic! This little enhancement saves you so much time and frustration.
But I don't know all the Command Parameters
I've been using SIMUL8 for 10 years and neither do I, but with our Predictive Text you don't need to.
SIMUL8 will only present items in the list that are relevant to the command you are typing. Also if you hover the mouse over any command in the list or over the current line you're typing SIMUL8 will give you detailed information on what the command does and the parameters that make up the command.
Can I Turn It Off?
If you want to you can still use the old wizard system to generate your Visual Logic. For examples new users will probably want to use the wizard approach to familiarize themselves with Visual Logic. As soon as you're up to speed with Visual Logic you'll want Predictive Text on and then trust me you'll never turn it off again!
Other Visual Logic Changes
Predictive Text is not the only enhancement to Visual Logic in SIMUL8 2007. There are VB style drop down code selectors, functions (another fantastic revelation for SIMUL8!), new Visual Logic commands and much more. We'll cover some more of the changes in the next few newsletters. If you can't wait check out our website for details on what's new in SIMUL8 2007.
