Making Simulation Building Easier by Laura Reid

I’ve been working with lots of experienced users recently and noticed that many people aren’t aware of some of the great SIMUL8 features that can be used to make building simulations easier and faster. This newsletter looks at these features and how and when to use them.

Finding an Object, Information Store or Label in Your Simulation

Sometimes, particularly when dealing with a simulation with many objects or blocks of code, it can be hard to remember where things happen, for example, where is a label value set. These features help you find this information.

View Full Documentation

This is a formatted file that documents every aspect of your simulation.

View File Documentation

By using the Find function (Edit > Find) you can search through the file to find the object, variable, label, distribution etc your interested in and where it's used. This is really useful when you want to remove all references to an information store variable or label so that you can delete it.

Visual Logic Find

Visual Logic Find searches through all your Visual Logic to find any text, then you can double click on the result to take you straight to the right section. You can choose to ignore some classes of Visual Logic lines, like comments, and search all Visual Logic or just one section. Clicking right on the "Find" list of line allows options for adding multiple breakpoints.

The Find option is available in the menu that opens when you right click (or press Insert) on the yellow VL screen.

Viewing All Simulation Information in One Place

Sometimes you want to be able to compare information across objects or Visual Logic. The following features allow this.

All Visual Logic

This is similar to the Full Documentation feature. It produces a text file that allows you to view all the Visual Logic in your simulation. It inserts a character symbol at the start of each new section that are translated into page breaks when pasted into Microsoft Word.

View Object Settings

This is a sheet that displays the values of key settings of all objects in your simulation. This is really useful for quickly verifying you've set up all your objects correctly and for producing documentation for your simulation.

Move Around Visual Logic Quickly

All the following features allow quick access to Visual Logic rather than having to drill down through several dialogs.

Fast Access to Visual Logic

The Visual Logic "View All" code list (Tools > All Visual Logic) contains the top 9 most recently edited blocks at top of list for fast access.

In fact, every Visual Logic window has short cut tabs to the other recently edited blocks of code. You can also right click on any tab to add another section of Visual Logic as a shortcut.

Code Bookmarks

Code Bookmarks allow you to create shortcuts to your Visual Logic. To create a bookmark, select a line of logic and press CTRL + SHIFT + n where ‘n’ is any number from 0 to 9. You can create up to 10 bookmark shortcuts to your code.

You can then access them directly from the main menu or click Ctrl-n, where n is the bookmark number, in any Visual Logic section to go straight to your code.

This feature is only available with SIMUL8 Professional

Access VL from Quickview and Explorer

You can open Visual Logic sections on objects directly from Quickview (Objects > Quickview) and the SIMUL8 Explorer (Objects > SIMUL8 Explorer). The other advantage is that you can easily tell which objects have Visual Logic and which don't.

Make Changes

The features below let you make changes to the settings and parameters in your simulation without having to open the dialog for each object.

Quickview

Quickview (Object > Quickview or F11) is a fast way to edit common data in SIMUL8 Objects. Select an object and Quickview will update to show the properties of the object and then just type in the relevant field to change settings.

Multi-Object Changer

With the multi-object changer you can change a parameter of multiple objects simultaneously to the same value. Just select the objects you want to change open the properties dialog (or use Quickview) to change the property of one of the objects, SIMUL8 will then ask if you wish to apply the change to all the selected objects.

Replace

The Replace function enables you to quickly change the name of objects (or labels or information stores).

This is particularly useful if you want change names so you have a common naming convention – for example, all work center names should start ‘wc_’ but you had created some with the name ‘workcenter_’

Hints and Tips

Fast Save
Using File / preferences / Fast-Save you can speed up saving / opening of some large simulations. This option tells SIMUL8 not to store results information in the file. When you open a simulation which has been saved with this option the time clock will always be at the starting time for the simulation run.

Customized Results on Summary
You can create your own customized results and add them to the results summary. Just create a variable in the Information Store to hold the result then right click on it in the Information Store and select 'Add to Results Summary'.

Healthcare Simulation Events

MASHnet Launch Event
MASHnet, an EPSRC network for modeling and simulation in healthcare is having its launch event on 20th September in Warwick UK. They'll be investigating how simulation research can be more effectively integrated with healthcare with the aim of developing applications for healthcare service managers and clinicians. For more information and to book a place visit MASHnet's website.

Rural Health Conference
We'll be presenting at this years International Rural Health Conference in Norway on the 21st-23rd September. For more details on the conference please see http://www.helse-nord.no/makingitwork, or if you would like to find out more about how SIMUL8 is supporting rural health communities please contact our sales team.
