SIMUL8 in Education

SIMUL8 Corporation has always had strong links with education and with SIMUL8 being used to teach simulation in over 500 institutions across the world, from New York to Brazil and from London to Hong Kong it's easy to see why.

Take a closer look at our SIMUL8 license for Education below to see why SIMUL8 is so popular, check out our new Student Workbook, and read more on the research currently being undertaken by one of our PhD students.

SIMUL8 EDU License - $1995 per site license

Lecturers have found that teaching simulation with SIMUL8 is easy. After a 1 hour lecture to introduce simulation, students can build and run their first complete simulation. No programming needs to be taught. SIMUL8 contains its own simulation language that can be used to extend SIMUL8; however, no course we are aware of has ever needed to teach this language. Most styles of teaching simulation can be done using just SIMUL8’s Objects and Dialogs.

The SIMUL8 EDU 2010 package includes a site-wide user license, free upgrades, student workbooks, Teaching resources, and more.

New Student Workbooks

We now have a new student workbook that is specially designed for teaching Business courses to accompany our Manufacturing workbook that proved so successful.

The new workbook can be downloaded from here.

SIMUL8 PHD Scheme – Healthcare Study

We want simulation used by more people; this is why SIMUL8 Corporation supports Ph.D. Research. We provide two schemes: one offering free software the other full sponsorship. These schemes have helped Ph.D. students from all over the world successfully carry out simulation research.

Current PhD Research Project - Maximizing Efficiency in the Provision of Cancer Care

This project is part of a long series that has increased management understanding of how to reduce wait times and reduce the costs of providing cancer care in Scotland. SIMUL8 Corporation has collaborated for many years with the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Care Centre (BWoSCC) and Strathclyde University as part of its program to deliver simulation tools that exactly match the needs of Healthcare management.

The BWoSCC provides all the radiotherapy, and much of the chemotherapy, for patients with cancer in the West of Scotland and, with referral rates on the rise, the findings of this research will play a key part in future policy decisions.

Jenny Morgan, who is based at the Management Science Department at Strathclyde, is conducting the research over  two main areas of study:

  1. The first, looks at the impact of changing treatment regimes within radiotherapy delivery, and seeks to provide insight into the consequences of implementing new and more advanced radiotherapy techniques whilst also encapsulating the potential resultant day to day operational challenges these changes present.
  2. The second case study will look at the booking process involved in radiotherapy delivery and how these processes might be altered to alleviate pressure on the system.

Throughout the course of her research, Jenny has been in regular contact with SIMUL8. Jenny says, “Working so closely with the team at SIMUL8 has provided me with the opportunity to seek help and advice from the pool of experts regarding the many phases of the model building process. The insight provided into the work they do, and the broad range of projects they embark upon, has broadened my initial traditional view of Discrete Event Simulation software and further enhanced the belief that both strategic and operational insights are required to provide insight to organizations.”

Jenny is still in the midst of her research and we’ll update on her findings in an upcoming Newsletter.
